Mathematics Standard 1D: Comparing numbers and quantities

Standard 1D Explained

Classroom Videos

In this video, a preschool class is voting on the reward for the gem party that they earned earlier in the day. During the vote, you'll notice students watching the quantities grow and comparing the amount of votes.

In this video, preschool students practice comparing quantities with a teacher-led snowball activity.

Playful Moments

In this video, preschool students play a game of "infinity points", a frisbee game with its own unique point system (1, 2, 10, and infinity points). Watch as the children experiment with number, quantity, and relative magnitude while playing the frisbee game.

Standard 1D Reflection

  1. As the students each make their vote, what do you notice about how the class is comparing quantities? What other foundational math skills did you notice during this whole group activity?

  2. How are the children in the “Infinity Points” video playing and experimenting with numbers and quantity? What do they already seem to know about the relative magnitude of infinity in comparison to the numbers 1, 2, and 10?
