Mathematics Standard 1C: Recognizing the number of objects in a set
Playful Moments
During outdoor play, a pair of preschool students play a dice game. During the game, the students wonder how they can "make" 10.
During center time, a group of boys created their own game using dice. One player rolls the die and everyone has to do that many "moves".
Standard 1C Reflection
What evidence in the first video showed that children were developing perceptual subitizing skills? What evidence suggested that some children had not yet developed perceptual subitizing? In what other ways could you recognize proficiency on this standard in your classroom?
In the second video, how did the addition of the second die change the math skills being practiced during the game? What strategy did both students use to recognize the bigger numbers?
