Mathematics Standard 1B: Knowing number names and counting sequences

Standard 1B Explained

Playful Moments

A pair of three-year-old preschoolers play teacher together and count the days on the calendar, mimicking a routine from the morning meeting. Listen for number names and count sequences.

Multiple preschoolers (age 4) create a game outside called Count and Jump. Listen for a few different types of count sequences as they play (counting by ones and counting back). Notice how the children chant the numbers rhythmically at times, moving their bodies with the count.

Standard 1B Reflection

  1. Coming soon!

  2. In the first playful moments video, what did you notice about the count sequence the two girls displayed? Can you break their count sequence development into three parts: 1. Number words they say consistently and correctly, 2. Number words they say consistently but incorrectly, and 3. Number words they say inconsistently or unstably? What evidence do you see in this video of the children's understanding of the rules of counting?

  3. In the Count and Jump video, what was about the highest number in the count sequence that the children could count to accurately? What sequence of numbers was stable for the group? Moving forward, what group of numbers in the count sequence would you focus on as the teacher?

  4. A few different types of count sequences were shown in the Count and Jump video (counting forward by ones and counting back). What other types of count sequences do you think preschoolers should learn and practice?
